Co-lab: verb, short for collaboration; noun, indicating a shared space for experimentation
Most of the time, potters work alone. We’ll share studio space and kiln firings, and maybe help one another set up and tear down for shows, but the actual creation of pieces is a solo affair. Usually.
But my sister Katie isn’t usual. A potter in her own right (watch this space for a sneak peak of her line, Sobremesa, in the coming weeks,) she shines in surface design. Last October we collaborated on a dinner set for a show. It was so much fun we haven’t stopped. I get to focus on throwing thin, lightweight pieces, she gets canvasses on which to play, and you get exquisitely-carved mugs and bowls.
It’s a win all around. But nothing stays the same for long, and this fall Katie is heading to college. I’m happy for her, of course, but I’ll miss her in the studio and I’m afraid these sister-made pieces will be in short supply. Enjoy the summer collection while it lasts!
